Johan Anthoniszoon "Jan" van Riebeeck [Culemborg, 21 April 1619 - Batavia (present-day Jakarta), 18 January 1677] was a Dutch navigator, ambassador and colonial administrator.
He became known as the founder of Cape Town, where he arrived on 6 April 1652 to be commander of the garrison there in the service of the Vereenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie (VOC), in English, the Dutch East India Company.
